Mountain Rifle Shooters Manual 2150 South 950 East Provo, UT 84606 Phone (801) 371-0412 IMPORTANT CAUTIONS 1. USE BLACK POWDER ONLY. Do not use Pyrodex Pellets. Pellets were designed for use in the modern inline rifle. Never use even small amounts of smokeless powder. Under no circumstances should any powder other than black powder be used in a muzzleloader. Use of any other propellant may cause serious injury to the shooter and damage to the firearm. Black powder is available in four degrees of granulation size, which are identified by a series of "F's" stamped on the can: 1F or FG: Has the coarsest granulation and is mostly suitable for extremely large caliber's and scale model cannons. 2F or FFG: This is a very popular powder. Having less coarse granulation, it is used in guns .45 or larger. 3F or FFFG: The most common powder, it is used for revolvers and rifles up to .45 caliber. 4F or FFFFG: Has the finest granulation and is used only in pistols of .31 caliber or smaller and/or as a priming charge for flintlocks. BLACK POWDER SHOULD NEVER BE STORED IN A PLASTIC CONTAINER which could build a static electricity charge. Keep the container away from heat sources. 2. PERCUSSION CAPS AND BLACK POWDER SHOULD BE STORED IN SEPARATE LOCATIONS. 3. DO NOT USE GLASS CONTAINERS TO STORE CAPS. They are sensitive to static electricity, heat, flame and percussion. Leave them in the same containers in which they are sold. 4. NEVER SMOKE WHILE LOADING, SHOOTING, OR HANDLING BLACK POWDER. 5. Make sure that spectators are completely behind you when firing. 6. Never let the hammer on a percussion firearm fall without a cap on the nipple or it will damage the nipple. On a flintlock arm, never let the hammer fall on the frizzon without a flint in the hammer. 7. BLACK POWDER LEAVES HEAVY RESIDUES. After firing, a prompt and thorough BORE CLEANING IS AN ABSOLUTE NECESSITY to black powder shooters. 8. Use only non-synthetic cloth patching. 9. PROTECT YOUR EYES from sparks, lead fragments, pieces, caps or flints by wearing shatterproof shooting glasses. 10. It is advisable to protect your ears by using an earplug or muff when firing your muzzleloader. 11. NEVER FIRE AT WATER, FLAT OR HARD SURFACES except under carefully controlled conditions. Bullets can glance of hard materials like rock, glass, steel, etc or skip off the surface of water and travel in unpredictable directions with dangerous velocity. 12. ALWAYS CHECK YOUR BARREL FOR OBSTRUCTIONS PRIOR TO LOADING OR FIRING. Water, snow, or any other materials can obstruct the barrel and cause barrel to be blown apart. 13. TREAT A MISFIRE OR FAILURE WITH EXTREME CARE. Keep the gun pointed in a safe direction and wait at least one full minute before repriming. There is always the chance a spark is smoldering in the powder and the gun could fire at any moment. 14. Make sure your gun is in firing condition before you pull the trigger. If you believe the gun has been tampered with or have any doubt about the condition of the firearm, consult the manufacturer or a professional gunsmith before firing the gun. 15. NEVER POUR POWDER IN THE BORE DIRECTLY FROM A POWDER FLASK OR CONTAINER. A sudden powder ignition from a lingering spark could cause the entire flask to explode. Instead, use an individual charge from a powder measure when loading your weapon. 16. NEVER ATTEMPT TO SHOOT OUT A BALL THAT IS NOT FIRMLY SEATED AGAINST THE POWDER CHARGE. Any air space between the projectile and powder could cause serious damage to the firearm and injury to the shooter. If powder fouling or other circumstances cause the projectile to become lodged in the bore, partially down the barrel, the ball must be removed with a screw-tip style bullet puller. Some black powder solvents can be poured to soften any fouling which is holding the ball. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD THE INDIVIDUAL ATTEMPT TO REMOVE THE PERCUSSION DRUM OR BREECH PLUG FROM THE FIREARM. 17. BE SURE THAT THE GUN IS UNLOADED. A reference mark on the ramrod will insure that all future projectiles are sealed to the same depth. There is a simple way to check it: With an empty barrel run the ramrod to the breech plug and mark it at the muzzle. 18. NEVER BRING A LOADED FIREARM INTO A HOUSE, CAR OR TRUCK. 19. NEVER DRINK ALCHOHOLIC BEVERAGES BEFORE OR WHILE SHOOTING. 20. CONSULT WITH COMPETENT FIREARMS INSTRUCTOR TO CLARIFY ANY INSTRUCTIONS THAT YOU MIGHT NOT UNDERSTAND OR WRITE TO US. 21. IF YOU SELL, TRADE OR GIVE THIS WEAPON TO ANOTHER PERSON, MAKE SURE THAT YOU GIVE HIM THIS BOOKLET OR AT LEAST INFORM HIM THAT A COPY IS AVAILABLE AT NOT CHARGE FROM AUSTIN & HALLECK. 22. BE A SAFE SHOOTER. LOADING A PERCUSSION RIFLE 1. Place the hammer at half cock position. 2. The bore and caliber area should receive a good cleaning just before the gun is loaded, so clean all oil and grease from inside the barrel by running fresh patches down the barrel until they come out clean and dry. 3. With gun pointed in a safe direction, place the cap on the nipple, set the hammer in a full position and fire. This operation will dry out the base of the bore and the nipple and should be repeated two or three times. 4. With the muzzle pointed in upright position well away from your face and body and the hammer on rest position (down), measure and pour the powder down the barrel (see charge recommendations). MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING THE RECOMMENDED QUANTITY AND GRANULATION OF POWDER. DO NOT OVERCHARGE YOUR GUN. NEVER POUR THE POWDER DOWN THE BARREL DIRECTLY FROM A FLASK. INSTEAD USE AN ADJUSTABLE MEASURE WHEN LOADING YOUR GUN. 5. Slap the side of the barrel in from of the lock. This will allow a small quantity of powder to go into the drum and nipple. 6. Lay a well-greased patch over the bore and press round ball into the bore. To facilitate this operation it is suggested that the use of a bullet started will help start the ball down the barrel and then you can continue with the ramrod. A patch is not necessary when using a bullet in the 1-28 twist barrel. 7. With the ramrod seat the ball down firmly against the powder, but without crushing it. Make sure the ball is firmly seated against the powder so that no air space exists between the ball and powder charge. A good method to determine this is to mark your ramrod at the muzzle once the first ball has been loaded. 8. With the gun pointed in a safe direction and the hammer set at half cock position, place a percussion cap on the nipple. NOW THE GUN IS LOADED. 9. Place the hammer on the full cock position. THE GUN IS NOW READY TO FIRE! Your weapon is provided with set double triggers. The rear trigger is the set trigger while the front is the firing trigger. A "click" after the rear trigger is pulled indicates the front trigger is set. The front trigger is then pulled with a very light tough. Before pulling the rear trigger, make sure the gun is in firing position. You can regulated the release hardness by acting on the screw situated behind the front trigger. DO NOT LIGHTEN TOO MUCH. 10. AFTER FIRING, SLIDE THE RAMROD INTO THE EMPTY BORE AND WAIT ONE FULL MINUTE BEFORE LOADING THE NEXT POWDER CHARGE. THIS WILL ALLOW ANY REMAINING SPARKS IN THE BARREL TO BURN OUT. 11. IN THE EVENT THAT YOU SUFFER A MISFIRE, BE CAREFUL TO KEEP THE GUN POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION AND WAIT FOR AT LEASE ONE MINUTE BEFORE REPRIMNG. There is always the chance a spark is smoldering in the powder and the gun could fire at any moment. Then reseat the ball on the powder, place the cap and fire. If after some attempts the gun does not fire, unload it (see point 16) but CAUTION! You must first remove the cap from the nipple and keep the hammer in a safety position. LOADING A FLINTLOCK RIFLE 1. Place the hammer at half cock position. 2. The bore and caliber area should receive a good cleaning just before the gun is loaded, so clean all oil and grease from inside the barrel by running fresh patches down the barrel until they come out clean and dry. 3. 4. Slap the side of the barrel in from of the lock. This will allow a small quantity of powder to go into the drum and nipple. 5. Lay a well-greased patch over the bore and press round ball into the bore. To facilitate this operation it is suggested that the use of a bullet started will help start the ball down the barrel and then you can continue with the ramrod. A patch is not necessary when using a bullet in the 1-28 twist barrel. 6. With the ramrod seat the ball down firmly against the powder, but without crushing it. Make sure the ball is firmly seated against the powder so that no air space exists between the ball and powder charge. A good method to determine this is to mark your ramrod at the muzzle once the first ball has been loaded. 7. Insert the flint in the hammer between two pieces of thin lead and tighten the hammer screw to hold the flint firmly in place. 8. Point the gun in a safe direction, prime the pan with a small amount of 4F black powder (use a "pan primer") and pull the frizzon down to cover powder in flash pan. 10. When the trigger is pulled, the hammer will move forward and down across the face of the frizzon. The flint edge, striking the frizzon, will produce sparks. The sparks, upon igniting the priming, will flash through the touch hole and ignite the main charge. Both flint and frizzon must be completely dry. 11. IF A MISFIRE OR FAILURE TO FIRE OCCURS, KEEP THE MUZZLELOADER POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION AND WAIT AT LEAST ONE MINUTE. THEN REPRIME and use a nipple pick to force a small amount of the priming powder charge into the touch hold and then fire again. If after some attempts the gun does not fire, UNLOAD IT, making sure that the hammer is in a safety position. 12. AFTER FIRING, SLIDE THE RAMROD INTO THE EMPTY BORE AND WAIT ONE FULL MINUTE BEFORE LOADING THE NEXT POWDER CHARGE. THIS WILL ALLOW ANY REMAINING SPARKS IN THE BARREL TO BURN OUT. CLEANING 1. DO NOT REMOVE BREECH PLUG, DRUM OR TOUCH HOLE FROM BARREL. THIS WORK MUST BE DONE AT THE AUSTIN &HALLECK FACTORY ONLY. 2. Soak a cleaning patch with black powder solvent (cleaning patch must be larger that patch used in loading round ball), place across end of barrel. With the cleaning jag screwed onto ramrod, push the patch into bore. You will notice the cleaning patch folds around and into the ridges on cleaning jab thus allowing it to be withdrawn from the barrel. 3. Run several soaked cleaning patches through bore until clean. 4. Run dry patches through bore until they come out completely clean and dry. 5. Run a very lightly oiled patch through bore to help resist rust formation. SHOOTING NOTES 1. For best accuracy only load and shoot a patched round ball in the 1-66" twist barrel. 2. Only load and shoot a conical or saboted conical bullet in the 1-28" twist barrel. WARNING READ BEFORE SHOOTING RIFLE USE BLACK POWDER ONLY 1-66" TWIST BALL BARREL LOADS TO BE USED WITH ONE PATCHED ROUND BALL 1-22" TWIST BULLET BARREL LOADS TO BE USED WITH ONE CONICAL BULLET MAXIMUM LOAD FOR .50 CAL. - 100 GR.
